True,but elite specializations can help further specialize in certain roles. While you could play a healer,with just core Ranger trait, Druid elite spec helped expand the tools available to Ranger healer by 150%. Same for Necromancer healer types.
Then give each core profession 1-2 new weapons, giving priority to dual-wielding already usable weapons (main-hand pistol for mesmer, off-hand sword for thief, etc). Advancing profession gameplay through elite specializations alone is a huge waste of potential.
